Illuminating Possibilities: Liberation-Oriented Group Psychotherapy with Laura Bruco, MSW, LICSW

for the first MAGPS Roundtable presentation of 2025!

In this 2-hour presentation we'll explore group work through a liberation lens, using concepts from diverse ways of knowing, from fiber arts to quantum mechanics, to spark expansive thinking about the potential of group therapy and to rethink traditional ideas of diversity, inclusion, safety and group norms. The aim is not to prescribe, but to illuminate possibilities for growth and transformation in ourselves and in our clients.

Laura Bruco, MSW, LICSW is a self-described liberation-oriented group psychotherapist practicing in Washington State via telehealth from their home in South Dakota in the ancestral lands of the Oceti Sakowin, also known as the Seven Council Fires, a confederation of Dakota, Nakota, and Lakota Sioux tribes. Laura received a BA in Sociology from George Washington University with a concentration in race and race relations. They received an MSW from Smith College for Social Work. Laura is neurospicy, disabled, and queer.

This is a virtual roundtable. You will receive the Zoom link after you have registered.

The Mid Atlantic Group Psychotherapy Society (MAGPS) Nominations Committee is requesting votes and nominations for its Board of Directors elections. These positions are for the Spring 2025 – Spring 2027 term.

The Board of Directors is a diverse, multidisciplinary group, dedicated to MAGPS’s mission and vision, which includes endorsing group psychotherapy as a tool for social justice and systemic change. Although many Board Members are Certified Group Psychotherapists (CGP’s), we represent, and welcome individuals at any stage in their professional development to participate on our Board team.

MAGPS is pleased to announce the Call for Nominations for the 2023-2025 Board of Directors. You may use this page to nominate your self or a peer, learn more about MAGPS Board positions, understand the election process, or scroll to the bottom for a timeline of events. You must submit nominations for yourself or a colleague by 11/21/2022. Voting will begin on 11/28/2022 and closes on 12/12/2022.

If you are interested in serving as an Officer on the MAGPS Board:

MAGPS Fall 2022 CONFERENCE

Registration is open!

Join us as Paula Atkinson helps us to explore the psychosocial aspects of weight and body shape, the broad range of social sciences including anthropology and sociology that create the way we think about weight, “health,” worth, and identity.

Over the course of this dynamic conference, we will explore the topics of fatphobia, size-ism, thin idealism, and weight stigma and how these intersect with other racism, classism, and forms of oppression as well as how they are present in groups. The role of body liberation and body justice will be included as we discuss how it intersects with diversity, equity, and inclusion.

This conference will be in person at the
Hyatt Regency Hotel, Cambridge, MD.
