First time to a conference hosted by MAGPS?

by Student-New Professional Representatives – Karen Eberwein, PsyD & Lisa Smith, MS

If this is your first time attending a conference hosted by the Mid-Atlantic Group Psychotherapy Society please read on to find some information about what to expect during the 3-day weekend.

At MAGPS we are committed to providing didactic and experiential training in psychodynamic group psychotherapy. Each MAGPS conference is organized to provide you with the opportunity to gain exposure to the selected topic through lecture, demonstration, and practice. If you are a first time attendee, you are likely one of many seeking to learn more about group therapy, whether you’re an experienced group therapist or are newer to the field. Regardless of your background, we welcome you to our conference and are excited to have you join us!

During the upcoming conference weekend, Lise Motherwell, PsyD, CGP, will introduce The Role of Play, Methaphor, and Evocative Objects in Group Psychotherapy. In addition, she will conduct a demonstration groups that will be followed by a discussion about the concepts, processes, and techniques that were displayed in the group. To help integrate the material, you will participate in a three-session small experiential process group. This time is set aside for you to experience, discuss your reactions, and learn about others’ reflections related to their self and the content of the conference.

Also, we provide mentors to all conference attendees who are new to MAGPS. If you have not already gotten information about or from your mentor, you will be receiving it very shortly. Please feel free to reach out to him or her for information about the conference in advance, or, as a guide or touchstone throughout the weekend. We will set aside time each day for mentors and mentees to meet face-to-face.

Lastly, amidst the time you spend self-reflecting and learning, we look forward to meeting you. You’ll see that the schedule includes a reception on Friday evening and a banquet on Saturday. Please share some of your time with us at these events eating, drinking (if you choose), networking, and socializing. We are curious about you and your thoughts about the weekend. See you in Charlottesville…
