The Cats of Mirikitani (2006)

Aging, homelessness, racial discrimination, culture, rage, pride, resilience and restitution are the major themes that are woven through this poignant film. “Jimmy” Tsutomu Mirikitani was an 85 year old artist living on the streets of New York when documentarian, Linda Hattendorf invited him into her home to escape the toxic fallout of the World Trade Center attack.

She gradually pieces together the story of his life: born in California, educated in Hiroshima, escaped Japanese military by returning to California to pursue painting, only to be imprisoned at the Tule Lake Internment Camp where he lost his American citizenship. Installed in Hattendorf’s small apartment all he wants to do is continue his art.

Fiercely independent, he initially resists Hattendorf’s attempts to get him social security and to discover the fate of his citizenship. It is through their relationship and her persistent but ultimately successful efforts to help him find a place in American society that he gains peace and acceptance of the historical trauma that derailed his life.
